Firefighters extinguish blaze at Union Street vape shop

Surrounding properties were evacuated after a fire broke out shortly after midday.

Properties on Aberdeen's Union Street were evacuated this lunchtime after a fire broke out within a vape shop.

The stretch between Market Street and Bridge street was cordoned off as seven fire crews were sent to tackle the blaze.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were alerted shortly after midday and the road was closed but has since reopened.

SFRS has confirmed no one was injured.

"Smoke started coming from downstairs"

Manager of the neighbouring store, Malik Haider, said he discovered the fire was coming from next door after his shop began to fill with smoke.

He said: "I was standing on my main till and the smoke was coming from downstairs.

"I was looking at my ceiling fans but I couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from."

He discovered the smoke was coming from next door so called the fire brigade and alerted surrounding businesses.

Malik praised the emergency services after everyone was evacuated safely: "The visibility was zero but the firemen did the job so bravely."

His store has now been allowed to reopen however Refill Station remains closed this afternoon.

Road reopen

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 12.07pm on Monday, 11 March to reports of a fire at a building on Union Street, Aberdeen.

“Operations Control mobilised seven fire appliances to the scene, where our crews extinguished the fire.

“There were no reported casualties.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
