Fire has ripped through a restaurant and bowling alley in Macduff.

Dozens of firefighters were called to Harleys last night to put out the blaze.

No-one was inside at the time, but the damage is believed to be extensive.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service statement said: "Pumps from Macduff and Banff initially attended the scene and the crews were faced with a well-developed fire within the roof space of the premises.

"After assessment of the scene further appliances were requested to support and they came from Aberchirder, Portsoy, Turriff, Fraserburgh and Cullen. There were a number of specialist vehicles involved, including: the Incident Command Unit from Altens, the height vehicle from Central in Aberdeen, Incident Support Vehicle from Peterhead and Huntly’s Welfare Pod.

"The fire had taken hold in the roof space of the building, which was 40m x 60m and firefighters in breathing apparatus worked in rotation to attack the fire and brought it under control by 11.59pm. Crews remained at the scene until 5.10am this morning carrying out damping down operations and checking for any hot spots.

"The fire investigation team will be at the scene today to establish the cause of the blaze and will be carrying out a joint investigation with colleagues at Police Scotland."

Group Manager David Meldrum, who was at the scene, said: “The crews worked very hard and dealt with the fire quickly and effectively.

“Their actions managed to prevent substantial damage to the building and they were able to contain the fire to the roof space. Thankfully no one was inside the premises at the time.”
