The family of a mother and her young son, who died at Aberdeen beach, have spoken for the first time since the tragedy.

Lynne Dawson has spoken exclusively to Northsound News about the moment she found out that her daughter Julie Walker, 37, and her grandson Lucas Walker, 6, had died.

The family from Aberdeen had been playing at the beach on the afternoon of Saturday, 20th August 2016 when they got into difficulty by the water.

The mother and her youngest child died in hospital after being pulled from the sea.

Samuel Walker, 14, jumped into the water to try and rescue his mum and brother.

He was taken to hospital with injuries which he later recovered from.

A 28-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were also taken to hospital after trying to help get them out of the water.

Now, three months later, the family have opened up for the first time about what happened on that day.

Mrs Dawson told our reporter Phil McDonald about the moment she saw policemen arrive at her door to break the news to her, and how she is feeling about the future.

We also spoke exclusively with Samuel Walker, who bravely told his story.

He says the family had been planning on getting a puppy, and had been out shopping in a pet shop earlier that day before going to the beach.

Following the tragedy, Northsound's charity Cash For Kids launched an appeal to try and help the Walker family meet their financial needs in the coming months.

Cash For Kids and Northsound listeners donated £12,355 to the cause.

Julie's two young children Samuel and Jordan were able to move in with Lynne and her husband.

Now, the family have thanked everyone who has supported them emotionally and financially since they lost Julie and Lucas.

Mrs Dawson said: "The public have been wonderful. We're speechless, I can remember the day Michelle from Cash For Kids came in. The first time it was about our needs, and she saw that we needed space.

"She came back the second time after she had spoken to the board and she told us what Mike Naysmith was going to do and me and my husband burst out crying.

"We just didn't expect it, it's just been amazing."

Samuel added: "Thank you all very much for donating. Hopefully everything will slow down soon."

"It's just amazing what they've done for us."
