The family of a tragic Aberdeen uni student are in Holyrood this afternoon - as they push for more to be done about the kind of violence their daughter was subject to.

Emily Drouet took her own life back in 2016 after a number of violent attacks at the hands of her boyfriend. She was 18-years-old.

A petition's being handed to ministers to try and get more funding to tackle gender based violence among students. It's been signed by nearly 13,000 people.

Last year, Angus Milligan admitted to the campaign of abuse against Emily.

He was spared jail for sending his then girlfriend threatening and abusive messages, as well as a number of physical attacks.

The petition, started by Emily's mum Fiona, reads: "While living in her university halls of residence our daughter Emily was subjected to a campaign of abuse and violence from her boyfriend.

"Emily tried to get help. Her abuser remained in the same halls of residence where he was able to see her room from his window - her room is where she should have been safe. "

"On March 17th, 2016, Emily took her own life just minutes after her abuser visited her room unannounced."

The petition, backed by the National Union of Students, calls for increased funding to help Scottish universities tackle gender based violence.

The petition continues: "Gender-based violence is not discriminate - it could happen to anybody at any age and we have to raise awareness of this and make sure that students and staff know what to do and where to turn to get help.

"Our students are vulnerable, often away from the security of home for the first time, and we need to protect them. Please don’t let this happen again - the #emilytest can save lives."
