Parents will be able to get discounts on school meals in Aberdeenshire thanks to the UK Government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme.

The initiative has been established to support restaurants and cafes by offering a 50% discount to customers on food and drink in exchange for helping a local eatery. The scheme also applies to work and school canteens, allowing parents and carers to obtain the discount when selecting food and drink for school meals.

It will be available to parents and carers to use in Aberdeenshire’s schools from Monday, August 17.

Cllr Gillian Owen, Aberdeenshire Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee chair, said: “Many families are facing financial uncertainties due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and the impact it is having on our economy. I am therefore delighted that our schools are participating in this scheme which allows children and young people to enjoy nutritious and delicious school meals at a reduced cost.”

Committee vice chair Cllr Rosemary Bruce added: “Our school catering service pride themselves on using the best natural produce. This is the ideal opportunity for those who don’t take school meals to try them at a discounted rate for the duration of the scheme.”

The scheme allows anyone to claim a 50% discount on food and non-alcoholic drinks to eat and drink sitting in as many times as they like (up to a maximum of £10 reduction per diner) every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday until Monday, August 31.

You do not need a voucher to use this scheme and you can use it at the same time as other offers and discounts. The reduction will be automatically available to you at participating establishments, which may include restaurants, cafes, bars or pubs, work and school canteens and food halls.
