The crash happened in heavy fog at Bridge of Muchalls on the A90 south of Aberdeen at around 8.25pm on Wednesday.
The 43-year-old was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary - reports suggest his condition is critical.
The road was closed until 3am while police carried out accident investigations.
There was another accident shortly after 6am this morning on the A90 at the Charleston Junction.
