Karen Bell’s home was plunged into darkness, her smoke alarms sounded and suddenly she could smell burning.

Aberdeen and the North-east saw an incredible thunderstorm through the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Waking many from their beds early, the loud thunder and bright flashes of fork lightning had been forecast after the warmest day of the year.

We’ve been inundated by your images and footage of the storm which lasted for just over an hour.

Karen Bell’s home in Cove was struck by lightning just after 4am.

“It was just after 4 o’clock, I was aware of the thunder and lightning at the point as it had woken me up”

“There was a really loud explosion and our house was plunged in darkness. Our smoke alarms started going off immediately and we were aware of a smell of burning and some smoke”

“It was absolutely terrifying, I’ve never experienced anything like it”
