Christian Allard to be new co-leader of Aberdeen City Council
He's been selected to head up the SNP group at the Town House
Christian Allard has been elected the new SNP leader at Aberdeen City Council.
He replaces Alex Nicoll who is stepping down from the role, but remaining a councillor.
Councillor Allard is expected to be officially named co-leader of the City Council next week, alongside Liberal Democrat leader Iain Yuill.
Commenting on his election, he said:
“I am delighted that my colleagues have put their faith in me to lead them, this Partnership and this council forward.
“I would also like to record my thanks to Alex Nicoll for his hard work as leader over the past few years, and for the support he has offered me. He has left a firm foundation that will be built upon.
“As we face the many difficult challenges ahead, I will remain focused on what I believe are the greatest of these, tackling poverty and establishing our city as a world leader in the fight against climate change.
“I am determined to build a more prosperous and fairer future for everyone in our city, and to make Aberdeen a better place to live, work and grow up.”
The former MSP, who is originally from France, recently faced controversy in his role as Anti-poverty and Inequality Convener over his comments about music charity Big Noise Torry, as he voted to strip its funding.
