Central Union Street set to re-open for buses

It's despite several local businesses calling for it to remain pedestrianised

The pedestrianised area on Union Street between Broad Street and Market Street is set to re-open to buses, with works on new bus gates set to be complete today.

Vehicles other than buses and bikes are still banned from using the area though, with cameras in place at both ends of the zone.

Taxis will be able to access it through Back Wynd.

However, only last week, the Trinity Centre put their weight behind a campaign from Aberdeen Inspired to unite and keep the area pedestrianised, saying it could result in "generational change".

They're set to be disappointed though, as are various local businesses who offered their support to the campaign that was launched shortly before May's local elections.

Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Councillor Ian Yuill said: “The reopening of the central section on Union Street is to be welcomed.

“We look forward to seeing local service buses use that central section again.”
