Calls for more action to tackle speeding through Shire hamlets

Calls have been made for action to be taken to address speeding concerns in an Aberdeenshire village.

Residents of Kirkton of Tough have raised alarm at the speed some motorists travel through the area.

Andrew Bowie, Conservative MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine and Robbie Withey, Ward Councillor for Huntly, Strathbogie and Howe of Alford have echoed concerns of locals.

Bowie and Withey have taken the matter up with Aberdeenshire Council and hope to see changes implemented.

Bowie has written to the local authority’s Chief Executive Jim Savege to request speed surveys are carried out, with hopes this can lead to a speed limit reduction.

Bowie suggests that “camera measures should be introduced by the local council” as well as a potential for higher visibility signs.

Bowie said: “There have been ongoing issues around road safety and speeding through Kirkton of Tough – as well as other communities in the local area.”

Bowie has warned that the village should not have to “wait for there to be an accident” before the issue is addressed.

“While drivers do generally slow down a bit coming through the village, there is a concern that many are still travelling far too fast to stop quickly if needed.”

Bowie emphasised that speed restrictions and signs can only go so far, and that drivers need to take extra care in places like Kirkton of Tough.

Withey was also believes something should be done before a more serious incident occurs.

He said: “There are two main problems. The first thing that must be addressed is the speed limit in areas such as Kingsford Road in Alford where residents believe it is too high.”

Withey thinks driver behaviour has to be addressed: “In areas like Muir of Fowlis and Keig, the speed limit has already been lowered, but motorists are not adhering to it.”
