Call for parliamentary inquiry into CAP payments "fiasco"
North East MSP Peter Chapman has called for an inquiry into ministers handling of the issue
There's more pressure on the Scottish government over CAP payments to farmers.
North East MSP Peter Chapman has called for an inquiry into ministers' handling of the issue, which he's called a "fiasco".
It comes after it was revealed last week that over a thousand farmers are still waiting for their money.
A government spokesperson said: "those who haven’t had a payment have been offered a loan equivalent to 80% of their claim".
Mr Chapman said, “We still have a shocking situation with regard to CAP - over 1,000 farmers are still waiting for their full payment.”
“We know how this happened - money was poured into an IT system that didn’t work, still isn’t working properly and the government won’t tell us when it will be fully functional.”
“Hard working officials in area offices up and down Scotland are being let down by this Government’s inability to deliver the required IT system.”
“This further goes to show the need for a parliamentary inquiry into this debacle. In order for there to be any confidence from farmers in the system we as MSPs must be able to scrutinise the government on this mess.”
