Two 13-year-old boys have been charged following a blaze which caused significant damage to a listed building.

More than 60 firefighters worked through Thursday night and into Friday morning to bring the blaze at the derelict hospital building in Aberdeenshire under control.

No-one was injured but “significant damage” was caused to the building at Glen O'Dee in Banchory, police said.

Officers added that the two 13-year-old boys will be reported to the Youth Justice Management Unit.

Detective Sergeant George Nixon said: “We would like to thank members of the Banchory community for their support and assistance throughout this enquiry.

“While no-one was injured, a significant amount of damage has been caused and the consequences could have been far greater.”

Glen O'Dee was built in 1900 as a sanatorium for patients with tuberculosis and was later converted into a hotel.

It was requisitioned by the army in 1941 and used as a billet and was later assimilated into the NHS.
