The police watchdog is probing a pursuit through Aberdeen which happened before a motorbike crashed into a tree.
It happened near the junction with School Road in Cults and seriously injured the 28-year-old biker-rider after midnight.
The 28-year-old passenger has been arrested by officers who say he was uninjured.
Police Scotland say a motorbike was chased during a brief pursuit from Westburn Road to Thorngrove avenue where the chase was abandoned.
Later, a bike hit a tree.
The series of events will be investigated by the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner after the force referred the matter to PIRC.
Road Policing Inspector Neil Morrison said: "As the matter has been referred to PIRC it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time, however we will of course be assisting with any review.
"I would appeal to anyone who saw a red motorcycle in the lead-up to the incident to get in touch as soon as possible as our enquiries continue.
"Any dash-cam footage or private CCTV in particular could be extremely useful.
