A Bat Mistakenly Travels From Romania To Aberdeen - Inside A Container!
A bat is recovering after mistakenly travelling from Romania to Aberdeen, inside a container.
The bat, which is believed to be a Kuhl's pipistrelle, arrived in the Granite city last Tuesday, after travelling 2,000 miles inside a container destined for Dyce.
It only weighs 8 grams and is unlike any bats seen in the North East of Scotland.
The Bat Conservation Trust have been looking after the animal since it was discovered. It has now been taken to a centre in Fife, where it will be put into quarintine, before being moved to captivity. The bat would not survive in the Scottish enviroment otherwise.
Dr Amanda Wilson, a volunteer for the BCT Helpline said “This is a very exciting find for us in Aberdeenshire and it has been a brilliant learning opportunity for bat ecologists in Scotland. The BCT Helpline exists so that members of the public can freely and easily obtain the help they need if they do come across a bat and it was instrumental here in making sure this little Kuhl's pipistrelle was and will be well looked after”.
Anyone finding a grounded or injured bat in Aberdeen, is asked to call 0345 1300 228 to obtain contact details for BCT Bat Care Volunteers close to them in Aberdeenshire.
