Asbestos has been discovered at an Aberdeen school during window replacement works.

Hazlehead Academy is the latest school in the Granite City to be found to contain the harmful substance. That comes after it was found at Bridge of Don Academy earlier in the summer.

Aberdeen City Council said corrugated cement panels were removed by a sub-contractor without proper agreement on safe working practices.

Bosses also said they don’t think anyone has been put at risk and the school’s due to open next week as planned.

A spokesman for the local authority said: "Works involving window replacement at Hazlehead Academy are being completed.

"The council is aware that some corrugated cement panels were removed by a sub-contractor without agreement on safe working practises.

"The council were alerted by a member of staff on Tuesday afternoon that work had started and the external contractor was instructed to stop work.

"The council has instructed a specialist licensed contractor to carry out the necessary remedial works.”

The discovery has angered the Unite Union. In correspondence seen by Northsound News, representatives accuse the council of withholding information, given that a meeting between local authority officials on Wednesday, the day after the substance was discovered at Hazlehead Academy.

Tommy Campbell from the union claims the discovery of asbestos at the school was not disclosed to union reps at that meeting.
