Amber weather warning issued across the North and North East

Forecasters say the warning for snow will come into effect from 3pm today and is expected to last until just before midnight tonight.

An amber weather warning for snow has been issued across the Highlands, Moray, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire

Forecasters say it'll come into effect from 3pm today and is expected to last until just before midnight tonight.

Drivers are being warned to be prepared to face delays, with delays and cancellations to rail services likely.

The Met Office also say there is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

Snow depth of 32cm in some areas

One Highland based forecaster has recorded more than 10 inches of snow in some areas.

Highland and Islands Weather say a snow depth of 32cm was recorded on the Brahan, near Contin, earlier this morning.

Thousands of pupils in the Highlands are spending the day at home today as the weather has forced school closures.

More than 11,000 primary pupils are off across the region, while more than 10,000 secondary students have also been told not to go to school.

Some schools in Aberdeenshire are also shut, while in Moray there's disruption to some school bus services, but currently no closures.

Traffic Scotland has warned drivers in the North and North East as snow is effecting the road conditions.

Live traffic cameras appear to show major trunk roads such as the A96 and A9 currently well gritted and clear.

Inverness airport have confirmed their runway is currently closed due to the conditions.

A social media post states: "Our runway is currently closed due to poor weather conditions.

"This is causing some delays; please contact your airline for an update on flights.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Further updates will be posted when more information is available."

Bus and Rail services

Bus services in Aberdeen currently remain unaffected, but the City Council reiterated how the Met Office warning says there will be heavy snow which will lead to travel disruption.

Stagecoach Highland say that all Inverness services are subject to delay, adjustment and cancelation.

The operator have confirmed services between Thurso and Inverness have been cancelled, with bus tickets being accepted on ScotRail services.

Train passengers are advised to head to the ScotRail website for the latest information on services.
