A road bridge over the River Dee which has been closed to cars may not reopen until 2026.

Aboyne Bridge in Aberdeenshire was shut to traffic last November due to significant safety concerns.

Originally announced as an 18-month closure, the bridge that was constructed over 80 years ago will likely be shut to cars for much longer.

A full structural assessment is expected to begin in the middle of May, however the results of this will not be known until August.

Throughout this period of initial work, the Council hope to keep the bridge open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Aberdeenshire Council has said that once the structural assessment has been concluded, work to repair the Aboyne Bridge will likely not start until the spring of 2025 and only be completed in early 2026 subject to funding.
