The coastguard is warning us not to jump off harbour walls after a 12-year-old boy suffered a head injury in Gourdon yesterday.

On social media an eyewitness describes yesterday's scene as 'horrible.'

He was with friends who helped keep Andrew Adam's head out of the water and lift him up the ladder.

The boy has been with his mum at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary today undergoing surgery on his face.

His mum Helen Esmer from Inverbervie told Northsound News: "He seems to be perfectly fine. He's had his surgery this afternoon to stitch his cheek back together because it was like a hole.

"Andrew hates being inside and confined to a bed, and he's been itching to get home, especially to see his friends so he can thank them.

"It was certainly frantic, he had already been pulled from the water by the time I got down there. His friends were amazing. They got him out super quick.

"I truly believe all his friends are heroes to me. If it wasn't for them, my son might not be here.

"The emergency services being told there was a person in the water meant we had everything from helicopters to boats to Coastguard to police to ambulances all coming to make sure that Andrew was ok. I'm extremely grateful for every one of them.

"We were all just a bit shocked because they've been playing on the pier all summer, and this is the first time there's been any real incident.

"It's still not quite hit me yet. Once we get home I may have a little cry to myself.

"Staff at the hospital have been fantastic. The plastic surgeons have been amazing. The paramedics were brilliant."

In a Facebook post the boy's granny is thanking rescuers for their response, and says: it's 'safe to say he won't be pier jumping any time soon.'
