An Aberdeen man is in a coma after a horrific accident on a family holiday in Malta.

44-year-old Simon Morrison was on a tour bus when the driver lost control and crashed into a tree on Monday

He was badly injured and is now in a medically induced coma.

His niece saved his life by making sure he didn't choke while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

Simon is a coach at Middlefield Wasps. President of the club Nick Runcie has told Northsound:

""It was an absolute shock, to be honest. I'd been messaging Simon all day Monday via text message about football...football talk.

"And I was half expecting a message from him on Tuesday morning. I never got a message.

"Simon's a terrific guy....he's one of these people who's very easy to talk to, especially about football.

"(His niece) managed to get Simon in a position that he wasn't choking - he was choking on his own blood at one point.

"What they have gone through themselves, the two children, would be pretty horrific to be honest.

With the two people that lost their lives as well on the bus, the kids were just sitting right behind them. It just doesn't bear thinking about."

Nick also gave us an update on Simon's condition in hospital:

"There has been a slight improvement. The issue now is trying to control his breathing. The internal injuries he's got - he's got a punctured lung, broken ribs as well.

So, I think once they actually get his breathing under control and get his lung sorted out, I think they'll see small improvements as we go, day by day."

This comes just eighteen months after tragedy hit Middlefield Wasps. Another coach at the club, Kieran Innes, was killed when his car left the A90 and crashed into field.

Nick Runcie said: "It's just unbelievable to think... after the Keiran Innes incident, it hit the club dramatically. Everybody within the club was affected by that.

"For something like this to come along so suddenly afterwards to another coach, it's just unbelievable."

Two of the young footballer players Simon coaches are now planning to cycle to Edinburgh and back to raise money for him and his family. Click here to find out more.
