Aberdeen school meals could have less fruit and veg

Officials warn imported produce is getting more expensive

Published 3rd Mar 2017

Healthy school meals are at risk in Aberdeen because of council budget cuts.

Kids may get less fruit and vegetables because it's getting more expensive to import from Europe - partly because of poor crops on the continent, but also because of the falling pound.

Officials are trying to get a new contract agreed - but they're already struggling with £22 million worth of cuts.

The report says "The current supplier may not be willing to continue the contract and therefore the Council is at risk of interruption of supply and therefore delivery of school meals and other catering services will be at risk.

"Should budget funding not be sufficient to meet the anticipated increase in price, then the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables offered as part of school menus and other catering services will need to be reduced."

The report will be discussed by the Finance, Policy and Resources Committee next week.
