The North East Police Division has said that over the last week, three aircrafts have been targeted with a laser pen on their approach to Aberdeen International Airport.

Officers are warning this could have tragic circumstances, with pilots being distracted or potentially temporarily blinded as they come in to land - putting the lives of both those on board the aircraft and people on the ground at risk.

A spokesperson for Aberdeen International Airport said:

“Targeting an aircraft with a laser pen is a criminal offence and those convicted of doing so could face up to five years in prison.

"Incidents such as this are extremely dangerous and could lead to a catastrophic loss of life.

"Members of the public who witness or are aware of anyone conducting this type of incredibly reckless behaviour should contact Police Scotland immediately.”

Inspector Hamish King, based at Aberdeen International Airport, commented:

“Such behaviour is extremely dangerous and could lead to a tragic incident.

"Information we have so far suggests the laser was coming from the Northfield area of the City possibly close to Auchmill Golf Course.

"Those responsible could be arrested and prosecuted, with the courts taking a serious view of such incidents. I would urge anyone with information regarding these incidents to please contact Police Scotland.
