Aberdeen City Council has announced a revised Winter Events Programme in response to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The fireworks night event will not go ahead. Meanwhile the Union Street Christmas lights and Tree on Castlegate will go ahead, but without the usual switch-on activities.

These annual events normally attract thousands of spectators and visitors into the city. Due to the current restrictions in place concerning public gatherings and the potential uncertainty of when the restrictions will be lifted, the implications on outdoor events mean that the Fireworks won’t go ahead and the Christmas lights and Tree switch on has been adapted.

Aberdeen City Council Culture spokesperson, Councillor Marie Boulton said; “Due to Covid-19 restrictions we are reimagining Christmas and whilst it’s sad we won’t be able to have the enthusiastic crowds gather for the switching on of the Christmas Tree and lights, they will still be installed to bring Christmas spirit to the City and create a festive welcome for shoppers and visitors alike.

“The safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors to the city remains our top priority and so we must follow all the latest Scottish Government guidance in relation to live events and public gatherings.

“With significant lead-in times and planning required to safely deliver these popular events, it is sensible for us to make the decision not to proceed with Fireworks Night and to adapt the Christmas switch-on events now given the uncertainty of the current situation.”

Following Aberdeen City Council’s Strategic Commissioning Committee last month, it has been agreed that Aberdeen City Council officers will work with Aberdeen Inspired and other agencies to look at collaborative ways in which the city centre can be supported over the Christmas period. A report will be submitted to the next City Growth and Resources Committee at the end of October.

Aberdeen City Council continues to plan for an exciting events programme in 2021 including the Aberdeen Highland Games, the Tour of Britain and the Aberdeen Winter Festival.
