Aberdeen Couple Become One Of The First In Scotland To Convert Civil Partnership Into Marriage
Our reporter Hope Webb sat down with Kath and Paula, the first Aberdeen couple to convert their Civil Partnership into a Marriage.
Some of Aberdeen's same-sex couples have become among the first in Scotland to covert their civil partnership into marriage.
New legislation came into effect at midnight, allowing same-sex couples across Scotland to change from civil partners to wife and wife, or husband and husband.
Aberdeen Registrar Office opened its doors at 8.30 this morning, and couples have been showing up all day to put the new legislation into use.
Kath and Paula were the first ones there.
They have been together for 19 years and civil partners since 2007 - and their new marriage certificate cites the civil ceremony date as their official anniversary.
"Today it's legal on paper, but 19th May 2007 will always be my wedding day," says Paula.
The first same-sex weddings will take place from Hogmanay, as couples not in a civil partnership can give notice that they are getting married from today.
