Aberdeen Art Gallery won’t be welcoming back visitors until the end of August at the earliest.

Bosses say they’re aiming to re-open by between then and early September.

Museums and galleries in Scotland can open their doors again by Wednesday 15 July as part of Phase 3 of the Scottish Government’s route map out of lockdown.

The revamped gallery re-opened in November 2019 after a multi-million-pound redevelopment – but was forced to close in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Gallery bosses say it will take a “number of weeks” to put physical distancing measures in place and other required safety measures.

Aberdeen City Council’s cultural spokesperson Councillor Boulton said: “Although we're eager to welcome people back to Aberdeen Art Gallery, public health must come first.

“We are working on the logistics to ensure that visitors have a quality experience throughout the Art Gallery, including the café and shop, and that staff are also protected.

“Additional physical distancing and hygiene measures will be in place in line with national guidance.

“We anticipate a re-opening date towards the end of August or early September, and an update confirming the date will be announced nearer the time.

“It will be tremendously exciting to welcome people back to the venue, which has enjoyed enormous success following its recent transformation.”

It’s likely an advance booking system will be introduced in order to allow as many visitors in the gallery as is safely possible.
