87-year-old man dies following A96 collision

An elderly man has died following a two-car crash on the A96 north of Aberdeen on Friday night.

The 87-year-old was driving a blue Hyundai I10, a 61-year-old female driver of a red Mini Cooper was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

The incident happened at around 7.10pm at the Tyrebagger junction. Three fire engines were called to the scene where one person had to be cut free from a vehicle.

The A96 was closed for a time in both directions between the airport roundabout and Blackburn, but reopened around 11pm last night.

Sergeant Rob Warnock said: "Sadly, I can confirm that an 87-year-old man has died as a result of this collision and my thoughts are with his friends and family at this tragic time.

"We would also like to speak to any drivers who may have seen the incident or the immediate aftermath, including a lorry driver who passed the scene. They may have information which could help our investigation and I would appeal for them to contact us. If you have any information, please contact Police Scotland on 101."
