The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after three degus were abandoned inside a cage in Aberdeen.

They're rodents and similar to chinchillas or guinea pigs.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted on Wednesday 6th April when they were discovered in a communal bin shed on Great Northern Road.

The degus are now in the care of the charity’s Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Drumoak, where they have been named Zap, Truffle and Stig.

Centre manager Graeme Innes said, “These pets were found inside a dirty cage although it did have food and water inside.

“Apart from being a little underweight, they are in reasonably good health.

“While we understand people’s circumstances can change, there is no excuse for abandoning animals. Whoever did this couldn't have been sure these poor animals would receive the help they needed.

“We are asking anyone who knows who may have owned them to call our helpline on 03000 999 999.

“These boys will remain in our care until we can find them a loving new home.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
