Listen: Work set to start on new ARI car park
It will add around 1,000 spaces at the hospital
The parking problem at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is going to get worse - before it gets better.
The car park is going to be closed for 9 months while a new multi-storey is built.
It will add around 1,000 spaces and include charging points for electronic vehicles.
The existing visitor car park on Monday 10th October.
The adjacent staff tarmac car park is going to be given over to the construction team and a small number of visitor spaces.
Visitor parking will be significantly reduced until the expected project completion date of July 2017.
Given the existing pressure on car parking on the site visitors are being encouraged to use alternatives such as public transport, parking off site or arranging lifts to and from the campus.
Gary Mortimer, Director of Acute Services and Chair of the Foresterhill Parking Project Board, said: “The parking challenges we face on this site are well known. On a typical working day some 13,000 vehicles come to Foresterhill; we have around 2,500 spaces at present.
"The cost of developing a facility like this could not be met from NHS budgets."
Sir Ian Wood's charity is funding the new car park - with a ÂŁ10million donation.
Mr Mortimer added: "We are incredibly grateful to The Wood Foundation for their generous donation.”
