Listen: Support for revamp of Aberdeen's Union Terrace Gardens
Friends of Union Terrace Gardens say they're happy with the plans
There's support for the upcoming transformation of an Aberdeen city centre park.
Friends of Union Terrace Gardens say they're happy with plans for a revamp that could cost up to £17million.
Councillors have announced that developer LDA Design is in charge of delivering the change.
They are the firm behind the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London and Gorky Park in Moscow.
Robin McIntosh, Chair of the Friends of Union Terrace Gardens group, says they've been involved in discussions with the City Council so far, and look forward to seeing the project go ahead.
Deputy Leader of Aberdeen City Council Marie Boulton spoke yesterday about the decision that was made three years ago to halt a £140million redevelopment of the park.
That included a £50million investment from local oil tycoon Sir Ian Wood.
Councillor Boulton says they were right to throw out the plans.
Kirstin Taylor, Project Director, LDA Design, said: “We are thrilled to have been awarded a project of such national and international significance.
“The City Centre Masterplan provides a powerful vision to set Aberdeen apart on the global stage and the Gardens have a huge part to play.
"The Masterplan attracted lots of positive local engagement which we want to harness. We see the community’s ongoing participation as key to the Gardens’ success.
“Union Terrace Gardens have great beauty and charm, and can be revitalised in a way that completely respects and enhances their 19th century heritage. They can offer traditional park enjoyment alongside new ideas and uses, and LDA Design is experienced in securing this kind of careful balance.”
