LISTEN: Northsound News Highlights New Move To Tackle Legal Highs

Published 28th Oct 2015

Councillors in Aberdeen are looking at getting a court order to seize so-called legal highs, after a tip off from Northsound News.

We told them about a similar move in Edinburgh - where £50,000 worth of the dangerous substances was removed from stores, by trading standards officers, yesterday.

It came after the Sheriff Court granted a 'Forfeiture Order' - which brands the drugs as 'unsafe' rather than illegal, allowing them to be seized.

It's hoped this order can now be replicated in Aberdeen, with shops such as 'Harminasion' on King Street, and 'Happy Haze' on Skene Square, selling the dangerous substances daily.

Previously, Northsound News exclusively revealed that one person ends up in A&E at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary every day, after taking legal highs.

Also, a poll we conducted found that 1 in 4 people in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire had tried the drugs.

Now, Councillor Ross Thomson has asked the city council to submit a report on the order, with the goal of introducing it in the Granite City.

Our reporter Hope Webb spoke to Ross Thomson about what the order would mean for the city.
