We have to improve, admits Aberdeen boss McInnes after more dropped points

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes admits his side have to improve following their slow start to the season.

The Dons' 1-1 draw at home to Inverness means they have won just once in their opening five matches of the Ladbrokes Premiership season.

Niall McGinn put the hosts in front after 51 minutes, but Iain Vigurs equalised in the 68th minute.

I thought in the first half Inverness had it too easy,'' said McInnes.

We played in front of them and didn't show enough quality in possession of the ball.

We needed to move them about a bit and at the start of the second half we got that.

It was a great goal from Niall and we passed up a couple of opportunities.''

Wes Burns was one culprit after a fine run. He showed drive, determination, pace and skill as he recovered from a trip to race clear of the visitors' defence, only to flash his shot across the face of goal.

McInnes added: When he brings pace like that to the game he looks like he should be playing at a higher level.

He's left them for dead and done the right thing to take the shot on. If it had gone in, you would struggle to see a better goal than that.''

But the manager knows his side have to do better.

That's two home games we've dropped points in now and that's why we've had a slower start than normal,'' he said.

We're still to find our rhythm and we need to make sure we're better next time out.''

Inverness boss Richie Foran cut a frustrated figure after the match and criticised his shot-sky side for not taking all three points.

He said: I thought Aberdeen were there for the taking. My players should have sensed that and they didn't.

Maybe I'll think differently in a few hours time - it's two unbeaten and we'll take the positives from that.

What I will say is these boys never give up, they never drop their heads and they keep going right to the end.

Defensively we were magnificent, but I thought going forward it was the poorest we've been and I was quite disappointed in that.''
