Just days after the Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven was slapped with an order to remove a banner hailing it as the birthplace of the deep fried Mars Bar; the fish and chip shop has today received a permanent commemorative blue plaque to celebrate its creation of the deep fried chocolate treat.
The Carron Fish Bar was left feeling battered after Aberdeenshire Council requested the removal of the popular tourist attraction’s banner claiming to be the home of the deep fried chocolate bar. Council officials said the removal of the banner is "part of a plan to smarten up the appearance of the town.”
As the news broke of the banner ban it caused widespread outrage throughout the north-east and prompted Greigsy to lead a campaign to have the birthplace of the deep fried Mars Bar marked with a commemorative plaque. Aberdeen company Lofthus Signs stepped forward to help mark the location with a specially designed plaque.
Robin Williamson, managing director of Lofthus Signs says, “When we heard Greigsy talking about the banner removal on his breakfast show on Northsound 1 we felt that the birthplace of the deep fried Mars Bar deserves to have a very special commemorative plaque in recognition of its culinary heritage. We are thrilled to be able to provide the Carron Fish Bar with the plaque.”
Carron Fish Bar owner Lorraine Watson says that they have been blown away by the support they have received, and the plaque from Lofthus Signs and Northsound 1 is the icing on the cake. “We are really proud of our heritage and that our creation of the deep fried Mars Bar attracts tourists from around the world eager to sample something that’s a little bit different."
