Police are continuing to appeal for information and witnesses one week after a major incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre left more than 100 people injured.

The incident occurred shortly after 6pm on Monday, 26th May, as crowds were dispersing at the end of the Liverpool FC victory parade. A car was reported to have struck several pedestrians, resulting in 109 reported injuries. Four people remain in hospital receiving treatment.

Specialist officers are supporting those affected, with mutual aid provided by police forces from Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Lancashire, North Wales and Cheshire.

Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson said: “This is a complex and constantly evolving investigation and we are still working through and assessing those reporting being injured and our enquiries remain ongoing. I would like to thank everyone who has been in touch with us so far to give witness accounts or supply information or video footage. The response so far has been of great assistance in progressing the investigation.”

She confirmed that more than 500 submissions have been made to the Major Incident Police Portal (MIPP) and that detectives are actively reviewing the evidence.

“I would continue to appeal for anyone who has information and is yet to come forward to please get in touch as a matter of urgency,” Det Supt Wilson added.

Paul Desmond Sanders Doyle, a 53-year-old man from Burghill Road, West Derby, has been charged in connection with the incident.

Doyle faces the following charges:

Two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

Two counts of causing unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent

Two counts of attempted unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent

One count of dangerous driving

All of the wounding charges fall under Section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, and the dangerous driving charge is under Section 2 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

He appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, 30th May, and has been remanded into custody.

Detective Superintendent Wilson is urging the public to avoid speculation:

“As a person has now been charged in connection with this incident, I would like to remind people not to speculate or share information or footage which could in any way jeopardise the case.

“We understand that emotions are still running high, and people are seeking answers, but it is vital that we allow the matter to go through the judicial process.”
