Large plumes of smoke as crews tackle Southampton fire

More than 80 firefighters are at the scene on Bitterne Road West

Tall plumes of smoke have been seen across Southampton as more than 80 firefighters respond to a large fire.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service say they were called to Bitterne Road West at 5:05am on Sunday.

11 fire engines, 2 aerial ladder platforms and other specialist vehicles helped tackle the fire, occurred involved multiple vehicles in a commercial garage.

The fire service say flames have spread to adjacent buildings, and that they are working to "contain the fire and prevent further damage."

Relief crews are no working at the site, with eight fire engines and specialist vehicles at the scene.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police have confirmed they are also attending, and have closed the A3024 between Rampart Road and Bullar Road.

People in the area are being urged to avoid the area, to keep doors and windows closed.
