A 15 year old boy has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder after the shooting of another teenager, aged 16, in Sheffield last night.

A police cordon remains in place at the scene on London Road where the victim, who remains in a critical condition, was attacked yesterday around 5:15pm.

Police say their investigation continues 'at pace' and they've renewed an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

The attack happened on a busy street during rush hour.

Superintendent Martin Simcock, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “Gun crime, and violent crime has no place in South Yorkshire, and the fact that a young boy is fighting for his life is appalling and will not be tolerated.

“Detectives, officers and forensics have been in the area today to secure evidence, but we need your help.

“I urge you to get in touch, no matter how small you believe your information to be, it could be the missing piece that we need.

“This boy and his family deserve answers, and we are committed to getting them.”

In a statement, Mayor of South Yorkshire Oliver Coppard said: “Last night there was a shooting on London Road which has left a 16-year-old boy in a critical condition."

"My thoughts are with the victim and my love goes out to his family at what must be an incredibly difficult time.

“I’m being kept updated by South Yorkshire Police about the situation on the ground. An arrest has now been made but the police investigation continues.

"It’s vital that anyone who saw anything, or who has any information, comes forward. If you were in the area around 5.15pm yesterday, or have dashcam footage, please check your devices and share anything that might help.

"Even the smallest detail could make a big difference in bringing those responsible to justice.

“Violent crime has no place in our communities. Every young person deserves to feel safe on our streets."

"Incidents of this nature are mercifully rare.

"Both gun and knife crime are going down in South Yorkshire, but I will continue to do everything I can to make South Yorkshire a place where everyone can not only live without fear, but can grasp the opportunities we are creating to escape the poverty and violence that remains all too central to the lives of all too many people.”
