Sam and Dave star Sam Moore passes away aged 89
The singer was best known for "Soul Man" which topped charts in the 60s
Sam Moore, who fronted 1960s band Sam and Dave, has passed away at the age of 89.
Moore passed away on Friday (January 10th) whilst he was recovering from surgery in Coral Gables, Florida, his publicist confirmed.
The singer was best known for providing the higher voice of the duo, together with Dave Prater, during the 1960s.
The band would go on to have a number of hit songs, including "Soul Man", which topped the charts in the UK in 1967.
During the duo's career, they also had other popular songs including "Hold On, I'm Comin'" and "I Thank You", which would later be covered by ZZ Top.
Their success in music was recognised when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, having influenced the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson.
Following the height of their success in the 1960s, the band would fade out of the spotlight, but re-emerged after the Blue Brothers re-recorded the song.
Moore would go on to have a public feud with Prater, after he hired a substitute and toured as the "New Sam and Dave" after the duo split in 1970. Prater died in a car crash in 1988.
In the wake of his fame, Moore would go on to develop a drug addiction, which he credited with causing discord between him and his partner. He would eventually overcome the addiction in 1981.
He went on to marry wife Joyce in 1982, with Moore saying it was her that helped him to focus on his recovery from narcotics.
The performer is now survived by his wife, Joyce, daughter, Michell, and two grandchildren.
