Max Whitlock - who trains in Basildon - is one of the most successful gymnasts in British history and has announced his plans to come out of retirement and compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The three-time Olympic gold medallist - who started his career in Hemel Hempstead - had previously intended for the Paris Games in 2024 to mark the end of his career.

However, after failing to add to his medal tally in Paris, Whitlock admitted he quickly realised he wanted another chance to compete on the world stage.

Whitlock, who will be 35 years old by the time of the 2028 competition, is set to return to a GB gymnastics team that now includes younger athletes such as reigning world champion Jake Jarman.

Whitlock’s remarkable career already includes six Olympic medals: three gold and three bronze. His decision to continue highlights his commitment to the sport and desire to end his career on the terms he feels are right.
