Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in Newcastle

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a couple in their 60s were taken to hospital with serious injuries in Newcastle.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Durham Street in the Elswick area of Newcastle at around 6pm on Friday evening, after reports of an assault inside a property.

Northumbria Police said a man and a woman, both in their 60s, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The woman sustained severe head injuries, and remains in hospital in critical condition.

Police said the man is in a stable condition.

The force said a man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton, the Senior Investigating Officer on the case, said: "This is a serious incident which has resulted in two people sustaining serious injuries.

"A suspect is already in custody being questioned, and I would like to reassure our communities that we are carrying out extensive inquiries to understand what has happened."

He added: "We would also ask any witnesses to come forward, as any information could prove vital to establishing exactly what happened."
