200 homes evacuated in Derby after major incident declared

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of explosives offences

A major incident has been declared in Derby and 200 homes have been evacuated after two men were arrested on explosives offences.

A warrant was conducted at an address in Vulcan Street acting on intelligence about materials at the address. A man in his 40s and another in his 50s have both been arrested.

Derbyshire Police said it was not being investigated as a terrorism incident and the evacuation of homes has been carried out as a precaution.

The following areas have been impacted by the evacuation and are closed under a police cordon:

  • Vulcan Street – in its entirety
  • Reeves Road - in its entirety
  • Shaftesbury Crescent – in its entirety
  • Harrington Street – from Holcombe Street to Vulcan Street
  • Baseball Drive – to Colombo Street
  • Cambridge Street - at Reeves Road and Shaftesbury Crescent
  • Shaftsbury Crescent – in its entirety

The people living in these areas have been asked to prepare to be out their homes for 24 hours. There will be a rest centre on Salvation Army, 38 Osmaston Road, Derby, DE1 2HU.

Those that are away from home in these areas, are asked to contact police. This can be done via Facebook messenger or using the 101 non-emergency number.
