60,000 runners have completed the Great North Run - one of the biggest half marathons in the world.

Participants began in Newcastle, heading through Gateshead and South Tyneside before finishing in South Shields.

More than 200,000 supporters lined the 13.1-mile (21km) route.

The race began with Newcastle United stars Jacob Murphy and goalie Nick Pope ringing the bell - signalling the start of the iconic event and the 13.1 mile race.

Among the elite athletes, charity heroes, and first-timers, there were a host of celebrities taking part - from Strictly star and YouTuber Joe Sugg, boxer Tommy Fury, Olympian Dame Kelly Holmes, former footballer and now reality star Ashley Cain and fitness coach Joe Wicks.

Sheila Chepkirui, 2024 New York Marathon champion, won the women's elite race and Alex Mutiso won the men's competition.

Sean Frame, last year's runner-up, won the men's wheelchair race in 49:24 and Mel Nicholls won the women's contest in 1:05:24.

The Great North Run's founder, Sir Brendan Foster, said the event was "more popular, more famous, more in demand...the whole dimension of the thing is much bigger".

When is the Great North Run 2026 taking place?

The ballot for next years race is already open - it runs until midnight on Sunday 14 September, 2025.

It will be drawn on Monday, 15 September when applicants will be notified of their results.

A second ballot will be held in January 2026, with the final places confirmed then.

The 2026 event - which will take place on Sunday, 13 September 2026 - will mark 45 years of the famous event.
