Rangers sign Senderos as Saidy Janko leaves Celtic on deadline day

Celtic loaned Saidy Janko to Barnsley for the season but two other potential moves for defenders fell through on the final day of the transfer deadline.

Jozo Simunovic endured a wasted trip to Italy as Celtic rejected an offer from Torino while Efe Ambrose remained a Celtic player despite interest from Rotherham and Standard Liege.

Former Manchester United right-back Janko made seven appearances under Brendan Rodgers but his inexperience showed as Celtic survived a tense Champions League play-off in Israel and his first-team chances diminished when Cristian Gamboa joined from West Brom on Tuesday.

Barnsley announced they had signed a "powerful winger" and head coach Paul Heckingbottom added: "He is powerful, robust and will provide us with a whole new dimension out on the wing. We've seen what he can do consistently in the Scottish Premiership and I believe he's got what it takes to make a huge impact at Championship level."

Simunovic travelled to Italy for a medical after a £3.75m deal appeared to be struck. But reports in Croatia and Italy claim Torino tried to renegotiate after having reservations over the knee injury which he has just recovered from.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ as the deal hung in the balance, Simunovic said: "I'm done with the medical checks. Everything was fine and Torino and I have agreed personal terms. Everything is now with the clubs and they need to find an agreement.

"I am ready to go back if the clubs cannot find an agreement. I just want to play football."

One player who ended his ties with Celtic is Charlie Mulgrew, who joined Blackburn on a three-year contract after leaving the Scottish champions at the end of last season.

Philippe Senderos signed a one-year deal to become Rangers' 11th summer signing while 21-year-old midfielder Andy Murdoch departed after failing to add to his 22 first-team appearances since Mark Warburton took over.

Aberdeen pulled off an impressive signing in 19-year-old Norwich midfielder James Maddison, who joins on loan until January. Norwich paid a reported £2.5million to sign the creative player from Coventry earlier this year.

Motherwell sold Marvin Johnson to Oxford for an undisclosed fee and replaced him with a loan swoop for West Ham's Luka Belic, a 20-year-old Serbian attacker. They also loaned 19-year-old defender Luke Watt to Stranraer until January and released Lee Lucas, whose short-term deal expired.

Inverness signed former Hearts defender Brad McKay on a two-year contract days after he was released by St Johnstone, before bringing in 23-year-old Fulham midfielder Larnell Cole on loan until January. The former Manchester United trainee has only made one substitute appearance for the Cottagers but was a regular on loan at Shrewsbury last season.

Hearts offloaded out-of-favour striker Juanma to Spanish Segunda Division side Murcia on a season-long loan.

St Johnstone signed Peterborough striker Joe Gormley on loan until January a year after failing to sign the 26-year-old from Cliftonville.

Partick Thistle paid an undisclosed fee to Portsmouth for Adam Barton, who can play in central defence or a holding midfield role. The 25-year-old former Preston and Coventry player, who has one Northern Ireland cap, has signed a three-year contract.

Mathias Pogba earlier left Thistle for Sparta Rotterdam after hitting three goals in 36 games for the Jags, who also released David Crawford following his spell as emergency goalkeeper cover.

Two defenders left Ross County - Chris Robertson terminated his contract by mutual consent while Scott Boyd became Kilmarnock's 16th summer signing after agreeing a season-long loan.

There was plenty of action in the Scotland camp - Ikechi Anya left to seal a transfer from Watford to Derby, who sold Chris Martin to Fulham. But Steven Naismith's proposed switch from Norwich to Sunderland did not get off the ground.

Dundee released 20-year-old Andrew Black, who played three first-team games, but Paul Hartley struggled to bring in the two new players he was looking for.

Another Norwich player moving to Scotland on loan is Tony Andreu, who signed for Dundee United on a season-long deal after rejecting a return to Hamilton.

Also in the Championship, former Rangers striker Nicky Clark left Bury after just two months in England to join Dunfermline, where he will join his father Sandy and his former Queen of the South boss Allan Johnston after signing a two-year deal.

And Morton rejected Doncaster's bid for 18-year-old forward Jai Quitongo, who has netted three goals this season.
