Hamilton player/manager Martin Canning has broken his cheekbone and is waiting to see if he requires surgery.
The Accies defender suffered the injury when hit by an elbow in a friendly match against Eastleigh last week and missed Saturday's Betfred Cup defeat to Ayr United.
Canning will discover on Wednesday morning if he is to have an operation.
He said: "I got an elbow around 60 minutes and I knew it was a bad one and I played on.
"The next morning I came in and it wasn't getting any better, I was going to play on Saturday in the Betfred Cup and I got an X-ray just to make sure, in case I did it any more damage.
"I was expecting to sit for 10 minutes and be told I was alright, but I have broken it and I have to go back in the morning to see if they need to operate on it or not."
Canning was pleased to secure the signing of former Celtic midfielder Massimo Donati who should go into the squad for the Betfred Cup game against St Mirren on Saturday.
The 35-year-old joined up with the Lanarkshire side after ending his second spell at Bari in his native Italy.
"It is a good signing for us," Canning said.
"Obviously Massimo has played at a high level throughout his whole career so hopefully coming here he can add that experiences to the team, which is something we are looking to do this year.
"If we can get a couple of experienced players to marry up with the youth then hopefully we can have another successful season.
"He wanted to come here which is really pleasing. His enthusiasm for football is great and he has looked after himself."
Donati, who played for Celtic between 2007 and 2009, insists he always wanted to return to Scotland.
The former Atalanta and AC Milan player said: I am really happy now as it was my intention to come back to Scotland.
"I played two years here for Celtic and it was a fantastic life for me, a big team and I met some great people and it was all good for me.
"I hope it is a good season for me and the team."
