The woman was airlifted to hospital after being pulled from the river near Dingwall at around 6.20pm on Saturday but did not survive.
Police were called to a report of a person in the water just beyond Ferry Point, between Dingwall and Conon Bridge.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: Following efforts by members of the public and coastguard rescue personnel, an elderly female was rescued and airlifted to Raigmore Hospital at Inverness, however she died shortly after arrival.''
