Potholes and midges are the two most hated things by people living in the Highlands, according to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS).

A quarter of us put road conditions at the top of the list, and midges flew into second place after getting one in every five votes.

The survey was commissioned by the Trust, and carried out by YouGov, and comes off the back of a new promotional video 'Love of Scotland.'

Celebrities including Gerard Butler, Brian Cox, and Sir Chris Hoy are featured in the three minute film which aims to boost NTS member numbers by more than a third to 500,000, double paid visits to one million, and increase regular donors and member visits over the next five years.

Nearly a third of people from across the Highlands and Islands (31%) cited the country’s landscapes as their number one love in Scotland, while 20-per-cent claimed it to be the people, and 11-per-cent the banter.

The country’s stunning coastlines were voted as the number one love by 13-per-cent, the mountains as chosen by 9-per-cent, the wildlife by 7-per-cent, the country’s history and heritage by 5-per-cent, and the country’s arts and culture by 1-per-cent.

Mark Bishop, Director of Customer and Cause at the National Trust for Scotland told MFR News: "It didn’t come as a huge surprise to us to see the country’s breathtaking landscapes and our history and heritage as some of the most loved things about Scotland and that’s exactly why the work we do in caring for some of Scotland’s most significant natural and cultural heritage is so crucial.

"Our new campaign has certainly stimulated plenty of debate around our loves and hates for Scotland, but above all, it’s making people appreciate what makes Scotland Scotland and celebrate the work that we do to protect our country for generations to come.
