A rescue pony has surprised it's owner by giving birth to a mini-mule.

Lauren Mosgrove says new arrival Katie is so rare she's believed to be the only animal of its kind in the world.

The 24-year-old, who lives near Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders, admits she was shocked when her miniature Shetland, named Peaches, delivering the hybrid this week.

Lauren told our sister station Radio Borders: "This is rare because miniature Shetlands are not supposed to carry anything they couldn't carry. Her being so small, under 30 inches, it's unheard of but she has produced it and she's here.

"I'm very shocked, I couldn't believe it was the donkey! It's amazing that she (Peaches) was able to birth Katie because she's so big. My vets say they've never dealt with anything like this or seen it. I think there's one (similar) in the US but it's bred with a standard Shetland and not a miniature Shetland, so I think she (Katie) is the only one of her kind."

She added: "We rescued Donkey from Ireland last year. The vet said we shouldn't worry about them breeding because it's basically impossible. So we had them together for a while and obviously he's caught her in that space of time."

Both mum and mule are recovering at home near Jedburgh today - we've shared a video of them online.
