The wreckage of a car has been pulled from the Caledonian Canal in Inverness.

The vehicle was recovered by specialist crews at Muirtown Lock this afternoon.

It had been discovered by a diver working on a nearby boat at the weekend.

Police believe it may have been under the water for some time.

However, it's not known how it ended up in the canal or exactly how long it's been there.

A police spokesperson said: "Police Scotland can confirm that the car was examined by officers and nothing of interest was found within the vehicle.

"Enquiries will be conducted as to tracing the vehicle's last registered keeper."
