A man has died in a "horrific crash'' in Aberdeenshire.
The collision involving a Honda CRV and a Vauxhall Corsa van happened at about 6.50pm on Saturday on the B9001 Inverurie to Rothienorman road.
The 28-year-old driver of the Corsa died at the scene. The female driver of the Honda was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.
A 30-year-old man, a boy aged nine, and a girl aged seven also travelling in the Honda have been detained at the hospital for observation.
Sergeant Jon Barron said: "This was a horrific collision and our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the man who has sadly lost his life.''
"In order to help piece together exactly what happened I would like anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have seen either vehicle on the road shortly before to contact police as soon as possible. Any information, although it may seem insignificant, might be absolutely crucial to our enquiries.''
"I would also like to thank the motorists who stopped to render assistance and first aid until the arrival of the emergency services.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.''
