Scottish mum calls on government to do more after Kate Winslet covers her £17,000 energy bill
The money will go towards operating her daughter's life support
A Scottish mum is calling on the UK and Scottish Government to do more to support families who run complex medical equipment at home.
Carolynne Hunter, from Tillicoultry, has been making headlines after Titanic star Kate Winslet donated £17,000 to cover her energy bill and operate her daughter Freya’s life support.
12-year-old Freya requires round the clock care from a team of specialist nurses who look after her at home and her vital medical equipment has to run all day and night to keep her safe and well.
Ms Hunter said she was overwhelmed when the Hollywood actress intervened as the donation means Freya can stay at home rather than go into hospital or care to have her medical needs met.
However, she is determined to continue her campaign to ensure the Government supports those facing similar struggles.
Ms Hunter said:
“I just hope and pray that the people in government who make the decisions about what’s going to be happening with the budget allocate funds to health and social care to support families and think about the energy companies and how they can make sure they are making this affordable for our families”.
Carolynne’s energy bills soared to more than £800 per month after the first price cap increase and she has been told to expect them to be as high as £1000 per month come January.
Aside from her Go Fund Me page, she receives no help towards the cost of keeping Freya’s medical equipment running.
