Police riot vans were called to a ‘disturbance’ in Inverness last night – following reports of a suspected hostage situation.

Crowds gathered in the Bruce Gardens area of the city as officers broke down the door of a property to gain access.

The stand-off lasted six hours, with officers attending in full riot uniform along with paramedics and fire crews.

A police spokesman said: "Following a number of calls to a disturbance yesterday at Bruce Gardens, Inverness, five people were initially taken into custody.

"A 34 year-old female will appear in court today and a 31 year-old male will appear in court tomorrow."
