It's emerged the man who died in a crash on the A9 at Milnafua taught generations of kids maths and computing at Alness Academy.

63-year-old Bernard McCourt was the driver and sole occupant of a Fiat Bravo which was involved in a collision with lorry at the junction for Milnafua on Wednesday morning.

His family have paid tribute to a "much-loved husband, father and grandfather''.

The driver of the HGV received treatment for non-serious injuries at the scene.

In a statement issued through police Mr McCourt's family said: Bernard was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed by a great many people.

"He was very well known in the local community having worked at Alness Academy for many years, taking great pride in teaching generations of children in technology, maths and computing.

"We would like to thank everyone who has sent us messages of sympathy, your kind words mean a lot to us.

"Our family is deeply saddened by this sudden loss and we would request space to grieve in peace at this difficult time.''

Mr McCourt was from Alness in the Highlands.

The road was closed for several hours following the crash and reopened at around 1.30pm.

Road Policing Sergeant Alasdair Mackay said: Our thoughts are with Mr McCourt's family and friends at this time.

"Our investigation into the collision remains ongoing and I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the collision or could have dashcam footage to come forward as soon as possible.
