Thurso man killed in A9 crash
A Thurso man’s been named as the driver killed in last night’s A9 crash.
Police have named a driver killed when his car collided with an unmarked police vehicle.
Dean Meiklejohn, 26, was overtaking in a Ford Fiesta on the A9 outside Thurso in Caithness when the collision occurred on Thursday evening.
Police said a Ford Transit van travelling in the opposite direction took evasive action before the Fiesta collided with a Nissan Qashqai being driven by an on-duty police officer.
The female officer was not injured and helped at the scene of the crash, which occurred just after 7pm. Mr Meiklejohn was from Thurso.
Sergeant Donnie MacKinnon said: Tragically this collision has resulted in the driver of the Fiesta sustaining fatal injuries and we are currently trying to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident.
Our sincere condolences are with the family and all left devastated by this tragic incident.
I would like to thank all those who assisted at the scene and our colleagues from the Scottish Ambulance Service and Scottish Fire and Rescue that were in attendance.
A full investigation has been conducted and is ongoing and I would urge anyone who may have information that would assist to come forward.''
The route was closed for nine hours while officers carried out investigations at the scene.
